HIV Testing

Free and rapid HIV testing is available at the HCHC Care Management office,
as well as other local locations.  For more information, please call (540) 432-3308.

Before you make the decision to get tested, we believe it is beneficial to educate yourself on HIV/AIDS.  Therefore, we recommend you review the information on our resource page about HIV/AIDS and transmission.

The only way to diagnose HIV is through a blood test.  Harrisonburg Community Health Center Care Management provides free, confidential HIV/AIDS testing using a 20 minute finger-stick rapid HIV test.  In addition to the initial HIV test, Care Management is now able to perform on-site, rapid confirmatory HIV testing.  If you receive a preliminary positive result from the first rapid test, a second rapid test for confirmatory testing can be performed immediately.  Eliminate the waiting period with conventional testing and get a confirmation of an HIV diagnosis within 30 minutes!

What to expect from an HIV test counseling session

Each test is conducted by a trained and certified HIV testing and prevention counselor who is able to discuss confidential issues in a comfortable and non-judgmental setting.  A counseling session might discuss some of the following topics:

  • Information about the importance of HIV testing and how often someone should be tested
  • Education on the methods of HIV and STD transmission
  • Ways to reduce the risk of becoming infected with HIV and other STDs
  • Need for additional testing in people who have had a recent exposure to HIV
  • Next steps for people who have a reactive test result
Off-Site and Event Testing

Alere Determine Rapid HIV testing offers the ability to test in non-traditional testing environments such as outreach programs and mobile testing clinics.  We would be glad to work with any organization to provide free, rapid HIV testing.  Contact us if you have any questions about an event.
