HIV Testing

Free and rapid HIV testing is available  at the Harrisonburg Community Health Center Care Management office,
as well as other local locations.  For more information, please call (540) 432-3308.

Before you make the decision to get tested, we believe it is beneficial to educate yourself on HIV/AIDS.  Therefore, we recommend you review the information on our resource page about HIV/AIDS and transmission.

OraQuick Advance Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test is a rapid screening test for HIV-1 and HIV-2, using blood from a finger-stick, or fluid from a mouth swab.  The rapid test provides results in 20 minutes, which enables someone to learn their status in a single visit and allows HIV-positive patients to be immediately connected care.  As with all HIV screening tests, a reactive test result needs to be confirmed by an additional confirmatory test.

HCHC Care Management uses the Clearview Complete HIV-1/2 confirmatory test.  The Clearview test requires that we collect a blood sample from a finger-stick, and results are generated within 15 minutes.

What to expect from an HIV test counseling session

Each test is conducted by a trained and certified HIV testing and prevention counselor who is able to discuss confidential issues in a comfortable and non-judgmental setting.  A counseling session might discuss some of the following topics:

  • Information about the importance of HIV testing and how often someone should be tested
  • Education on the methods of HIV and STD transmission
  • Ways to reduce the risk of becoming infected with HIV and other STDs
  • Need for additional testing in people who have had a recent exposure to HIV
  • Next steps for people who have a reactive test result
Off-Site and Event Testing

OraQuick and Clearview testing options offer the ability to test in non-traditional testing environments such as outreach programs and mobile testing clinics.  We would be glad to work with any organization to provide free, rapid HIV testing.  Contact us if you have any questions about an event.
